Default engine realiability

i'm currently looking or a4 b5 or b6 but more towards b5 as i'm also looking for another car at the same time

anyway, i'm curious about its engine realiability. what would be its average life span? in mileage

also what are the common problems of the car overall i should watch out for when buying one?

thanks in advance

I have a 2000 with nearly 115k miles on it. It's been very reliable for me (knock on wood). I've been careful to change the oil (synthetic Mobile 1) every 5k. I've taken it to the same indy mechanic (Audi/Porsche specialist) since the maintenance warranty ended. When you buy it from someone, it would be nice to have all the maintenance papers and make sure that timing belt was changed -- Audi said it would last for around 90k but they were going bad earlier. I think there was a maintenance recall or something (tensioner). Anyway, I can't say it was more reliable than my Acura Integra which made 192k before some guy hit it, but so far, the car has done her job well. Oh, it's been to the Arizona dessert (sp?), Tahoe, Mammoth, Laguna Seca (track)...I love her. Hope some more people chime in. Good luck!

2.8 or 1.8t? My 2.8 30v (motor wise) has been pretty good to me and it has approx 175k. My son's '01 1.8 was a nightmare for me for a couple of years but I finally ignored some of the vag/com code readings, looked a little deeper into things and finally sorted things out. Two years though and that really ruined a lot of my days not to mention ruining his bank balance going to the dealer too many times. The rest of the car? Hmmmmmmmmmmm. If the market was not upside-down right now and as much as I like the car, my Avant would be down the road.

my avant 2.8 is almost 10yrs old, 110K, tip, knock on wood, no major issues, only the water pump craped out at 70K, good thing it happened at my driveway, big puddle of coolant.

I've been using full syn, every 6month, 2 tip service so far, changed rear diff w/redline.

just find one with service history, these B5's are fairly cheap now. I saw some 2.8 w/ 5sp for 5K few month back.

I have the 1.8 ATW "sludge" engine with 143K. Stock clutch ran til 125K. Besides maintence. Never a major problem.

Used Audi's of this vintage are not for the faint of heart. If you maintain them and are not afraid of some DIY work or research you will be fine. At retail repair and labour rates, better to higher a limo and driver.
