Default Engine Stalling

Hi, I have a 1998 A4 with every available package from the 2.8 V6 to pearlescent white paint. I've owned and loved it deeply since November of 2009. Recently it has been stalling out occasionally. It also seems to have more trouble starting after I put gas in. When stopped at a light or parked, it seems to shutter like its about to stall, but if I push on the gas some, it smooths out and quits shuddering. Any thoughts? Thanks all.

It is a Quattro with 180,430 miles. Also, on 2 occasions it has not started, both times were after putting gas in the car. It turned over, cranked, wasn't the battery. I have to step on the gas while turning the key, then it starts. Also have to keep giving it gas for a bit or it stalls.

Check for stored codes.

I don't get what you mean. I'm not the most auto-savvy person in the world.

Generally you don't throw parts at these cars,it is too time consuming and costly.

In many cases when a problem occurs a fault code is stored. You might get a CEL or MIL. Check Engine Light / Malfunction Indicator Light. Not always though.

You can use a code reader to read the codes from memory. You plug into the socket under the steering wheel.

VAG.com is the one most of the Old Timers use. Once you know the code you have a much better chance of fixing it. Vag.com (by Ross-tech) runs on a laptop and has a lot of features.

Parts stores like Autozone also lend / sell generic readers. These can work OK but are not Audi/VW specific so can miss some codes.

Harbor freight sells a generic code reader for about $50.

If you plan to keep the car get a Ross Tech : http://www.ross-tech.com/ to check the codes. A lot of the others do not give you enough info. They are a advertiser - you can also ask in your local forum if anyone has one and will check your car for a beers.

You should try a can of BG44K to clean out your fuel system It could be the idle control valve is dirty.

When was the timing belt changed last? (Don't think it is the issue you have but worth having done if you do not know when it was done.)

There is no ICV on an 98.

Yeah - forgot about that - but the fuel systems is still cleaned via the additive - and make a difference
