engine stalling on a tip.

i have this huge exhaust leak. last night i was gonna head home from a friends house, i tried starting my car and nothing. cranked it again and it fired up for a split second then died out. tried starting it again and nothing. the engine turns over but doesnt start. i waited a few minutes, checked the coilpacks (they seemed ok), did a few tba's and tried again and it started.

now the exhaust leak i have is pretty big. big enough that there's little to no fumes coming out of the muffler in the back and loud enough that when im in a parking structure, it sets off alarms. so im thinking, can it be possible that the leak is soo big that there isnt enough back pressure to start the car?!?it might seem like a dumb reason but im pretty sure the leak is within the engine bay (pre downpipe of exhaust system). im gonna go have it checked out tomorrow. what do you guys think?

no, but thats happaned before. the sound is similar but not the same

w/o the cat, you hear the turbo whine at idle sorta like an s/c.

Backpressure is not needed to start, or run car.

At all. Ever. In any vehicle.

All cars run because of a pressure delta between the compressed cylinder and the atmosphere.

Does it happen on a warm or cold start?

and do you smell gas afterwards? I had something similar happen to me and it turns out it was the coolant sensor messing up the mixture. Its an uber cheap part ~$5 and takes 10 minutes to replace.
