Exploding Oil Seal?
At 70k miles, my '98 30V 2.8 quattro blew out the front crank seal 4k miles after it had been replaced during TB and tensioner replacement. It happened during a stretch of sub-zero degree days. The repair shop said it couldn't have been a defective repair job...or the seal would have been leaking (which it hadn't been). They said lots of pressure was required to blow it out, and said maybe ice had formed in a crankcase vent tube or in the (aftermarket -- Fram) oil filter, and the oil pump pressure built up until something had to go. The dipstick, apparently, is stronger than the crank seal?? Anyone ever hear of such a thing??

Sounds like a bad repair to me. The pressure required to blow out the crank seal would be catastrophic for a number of other potential exit avenues long before the seal blew.

no way
when installed right it will take a lot of praying to get it out
my guess is that they used some kind of lubricant to slide it in and it got loose slowly until it came off
