If it's the first (you just got a socket and chip), you need to solder the socket onto your existing ECU and insert the chip into the socket.
If it's the latter (you bought an entire ECU that's already chipped), you just need a VAG tool to recode the soft coding of the ECU to match that of your own car.

You need to use a licensed copy of the vagCOM to do any recoding.
Be aware that some ECU's are not recodable. I came across one when I had my 98.5. The ecu I bought from a manual car could not be recoded - the code would not stick after a recode.
