Default giac chip confirmation and question

i've read the searches but i just wanna make sure i've got things right. i'm bidding on a 1.8tq manual chip w/ socket. all i need 2 do is get a vag and reprogram it and it'll work on my 97 1.8tq auto. the chip is 96-99.5 for non-dbw.

and

do i need to change my driveter valve or get anything else? if so can you suggest a good one to switch too?

isn't that what you'd use to reprogram it?

Default You don't typically reprogram the chip, you reprogram an ECU.

People buy other ECU's that are not their stock part number and reprogram the ECU using a VAG tool to adapt the ECU to their own car.

Default thats what i wuz thinking of then...but...

ic thats what i was thinking... but what i'm really concerned about is what else i'd need... i'm fairly certain that the chip is compatible with my car.

You'll need to change the softcode in the new ECU to match to the one in your current ECU

Default k, i'm not too clear, did you get just the chip w/ socket or

did you get an entire ECU that's already socketed and chipped?

If it's the first (you just got a socket and chip), you need to solder the socket onto your existing ECU and insert the chip into the socket.

If it's the latter (you bought an entire ECU that's already chipped), you just need a VAG tool to recode the soft coding of the ECU to match that of your own car.

Default The 97 is tiptronic right?

Yes this should work, assuming you get the socket soldered to the ecu.

You need to use a licensed copy of the vagCOM to do any recoding.

Be aware that some ECU's are not recodable. I came across one when I had my 98.5. The ecu I bought from a manual car could not be recoded - the code would not stick after a recode.
