Default Got a bit of a problem guys!!

OK...so my baby is 3 weeks old (it's a 98.5) Tonight I was leaving a buds house and my CEL came on. Strange I thought...my car is running fine...oh well. Get to yet another friends house and stop the car...then try to start it back up...all it does is turn over...won't start. So..I went inside to eat...again..and came out bout 2 hours later. Put the key in..and it started right up! Drove it home...shut it off...let it sit a couple minutes..try to start....nothing. It's TRYING to turn over...but it's not starting. WTF??..Anyone with some ideas??? What could it be???

I run 94 Octane and I'm at 1/2 tank. The car feels plenty powerful...either way..wouldn't the other 3 coilpacks be able to start it. I was thinking of the battery ..I might try it...but would a battery throw on a CEL??

Default I'd check coolant temp sensor.

I don't think its the battery. Battery voltage can be read at the gauge, and can be checked when cranking. Coil pack should be a consistant failure, not good now, bad later, and then good again. Wouldn't hurt to throw a VAG COM on it and see what set the code off.

Default My battery went dead and never threw a CEL code. So, that may not be the problem. But....

maybe if someone you know has a fresh battery in their car they would not mind letting you borrow just to test. If the different battery starts the car then youknow what theproblem is.

Otherwise, bad gas... not low-octane but gas that had something in it, may cause a CEL.

It should start with only three coild packs, but if the battery does not have enough juice to ignite them, nothing will happen.

Ok....so it's not the coilpack...plus...wounldn't the car feel stuggish if I had a bad coilpack? II have noticed the coolant gauge (one of the upper 2 in my cluster..right???) barely ever moves away from "C" even when driving normal..or hard...

The battery is strong becuase it just sits there and cranks and cranks...but eh car doesn't start... ANY OTHER IDEAS???

I'm not sure if the gauge sensor is the same as the ECU sensor, but if the ECU sensor was bad, it would screw up the mixture at re-start.

Default If it was reading too cold it would richen the resart to the point of flooding. More.

Which would explain why it would start after it sat for a while. I think this is the source of your problem.

Default Thought it smelled an awful lot like gas when I went out 2 hours later!

I'll run a VAG-COM through it tomorrow and ck it out...

I'd lean toward tripleblackA4's diagnosis. I had same symptoms and it was the Coolant Temp Sensor
