Head Unit Problems
This piece of crap head unit came with my car and the backlight doesnt work and neither do CDs (CD is inserted into the unit, not in trunk). The back has all the wires connected except for one which is cut, and one small one that I pulled out of the small hole where the cut one is. Anyone know if this has anything to do with either problem I'm having, or does anyone have any recommendations for a new head unit thats not too expensive?

Also I've searched and found threads about the high pitched whine that comes out of the speakers when the radio is on but didnt find any real answer that I could understand about getting rid of it. It's unbearable on AM, FM is just an annoyance.

The whinning is alt noise.

looks like a Sony... that's your first problem.
if one of those wires is an illumination wire,then that could have an affect on your backlighting.
The resistance to playing CDs is probably just because the laser's gotten dirty or out of alignment.

It is a Sony. Would they have the 'illumination wire' separate from all the others like that?
I cant find any loose wires back there that would plug into that one. Does the stock audi head unit have an illumination wire or do you think I have to splice the power wire?

Damn I'm good :-) nono, you don't want to send a 12V signal to it...
i think it's a 3-5V signal, basically just telling it to get dim or get bright. illumination is the orange striped wire
if it's shorted somewhere internally, though, it could be causing the problem.
the sony's nice bc it's red (probably) which matches, but the deck itself is a POS.
You're truly better off just getting a new one.
should be damn easy since you've already got an aftermarket in there.
A $200 alpine or something would be nice, may not match super-well though

that is not always needed...
if he has an aftermarket amp. it could have a bad ground. Many times fixing the ground on an amp. can get rid of that noise. Also, there is usually a popping sound when turning the stereo off and on when the ground is bad. An isolator should be the last resort when all else fails. No need to put a band-aid on a problem if the problem is a fixable error in wiring.
