HELP, is this bit important ?

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/18850/passat_18t.jpg"></center><p>This is on my wifes 1.8T Passat. I was changing the air filter, and noticed this part is very brittle, and more importantly appears to have a minor crack or hole in the side of it!

Its been rubbing on the edge of the airbox.

Help !

Should I bother replacing it ? Whats it do ? Vacuum or pressure? Will some tape just fix it ?

IIRC it is part of the evap emissions collection. It will eventually toss a code.

Can I just tape it up ?? Ie is it under lots of pressure or Vacum

or is it only light pressure or vaccum ??

Your best guess will do.

Best guess will have to do :) ... I think there is a check valve so it only sees vacuum.

I don't think it will affect performance much. You'll want to get it repllaced sooner or later but for a bit should be okay ...

Check valve for Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister

I replaced the same one on my 1.8T. Turbo heat tends to melt the little sucker.

I paid full price at the dealer, but realized after the fact that I could have found a cheaper one on the internet. After that, I found a generic equivalent for a few dollars at the local auto parts store.

Part Number: 058 905 291

If you find one at an auto parts store, to determine the proper orientation, just blow through both ends of the original to determine which way the air should flow.
