Default Help with a Code

So my car has been getting the P0171 - Bank 1 system too lean CEL

I took it too the dealer and they said it was a faulty n75 valve. So they replaced that but the CEL came back up again right after i got it back. So i assumed it was probably the MAF, so i cleaned it by putting the whole sensor and housing into a ziplock bag with alcohol and let dry for 3hrs. Then went to autozone to clear my CEL.....it ran a little bit better, but the car seemed a bit sluggish still, especially in first gear. Basically the car seems a TINY bit faster then when its in limp mode, and then the next day the CEL came back on?

Any thoughts? Broken MAF? Boost leak? O2 sensor? even when the CEL is off the car still runs like theres bearly any boost.

car is a 2001 1.8t awm with 80k miles

TIA

Bank 1 = O2 sensor. I forget if Bank 1 is pre or post-cat. Search.

'Bank 1' is redundant for 4-cyl (it's all bank 1) 'Sensor 1' is pre-cat, 'Sensor 2' is post-cat

Default A few other things to check...

If you can find someone with a VAG-COM, get readings from your O2 sensors and especially the MAF to verify that they're within spec. The ECU is usually pretty good at spotting a bad O2 sensor (and throws a specific code for it), but a degrading MAF tends to throw this code.

Also check all of your vacuum lines, especially the one going to the fuel pressure regulator. If it's not the MAF, this is usually caused by a leak somewhere. Also check the intake ducts for leaks or cracks.

Good luck!

hey screw you Nate. i did tons of searching. Im assuming its the MAF from what i have read. but i wanted some other opinions from my symptoms.

is that a crime? dont judge me just because its my first post on AW. I am not a Noob to forums by any means. I do tons of research before i post anywhere so if you dont have anything good to say get lost.

if i didnt do any searching how would i have found the idea to clean my MAF or know if it was potetially my O2 sensor?

Eh, I got my laugh in knowing the dealer saw you were a sucker and took advantage of it.

Default Congratulations on your second (and last?) post

Nate provides a lot of help to people here. I think if the forum were to take a vote on who should get lost, it wouldn't be him.

Since you aren't a noob to forums in general, you must know the following:

1) People asking questions either really want help or want their egos stroked. If the former, they tend to be grateful for any help, no matter how acerbically (yeah, look it up) offered.

2) It always helps to read the forum a bit before jumping in. It helps avoid embarassing mistakes like not knowing to change the subject to include the first part of your reply to a post. Hint, hint!

3) People get upset about others who don't search because the same questions keep coming up again and again. We're not here as some kind of charity work for drive-by posters. It helps if you say you've searched, say what you think you've learned about your problem, and ask where to go from there.

I'm sure if you just wanted that one question answered, this is the last we'll see of you (maybe one more post to insult me). If you really want to stay, learn, and contribute, understand that you haven't made a good start.
