High octane
I'm the new guy on the board with a 98 A4 2.8 Q.<br>Question: I noticed that there seem to be some acceleration lag at higher RPMs when I'm really "juicing" it. I don't know for sure but I think that my wife was putting in less than 93 octane gas. I just filled it with 93 and it seems to be better. It it reasonable for me to think that the hesitation is from the fuel? Some of the earlier posts address this issue but not exactly. Any insight would be appreciated.

<br>Unless my recollection is faulty, I don't ever recall seeing gasoline with an octane reading over 91 in our area (Colo Front Range). Does this mean A4 owners in this area will experience low octane-related performance problems? Does the rest of the country actually get premium at 93 octane? If so, how do we get it here?

jeff, besides the loss of power, with the windows down you'll probably hear engine knock with full accelleration (not a good thing). These Audi's seem to really need the higher octaine to run right.Doc in colorado might be able to get away with a lower octaine due to the altitude but i'd still go for the highest octaine available. The computer will adjust some to reduce knock after afew seconds but the damage can add up. If you can afford the car you should be able to afford the gas to make it run right.

Ya your right. I just have heard a lot over the years about 91 vs 93 and how tests can't prove any difference in performance in most cars but then again, A4 is not most cars right? Besides, as much as I want to drive the car every day, my wife does and she is a bit of a cheapo when it comes to gas. Not anymore though at least as of today.

The octane in Co is lower due to the thinner air<br>which equates to needing lower octane.<br>However with the turbo compressing the air back to sea level you need as high an octane as you can get if you are going to be pushing it

Chicago High octane
I am in Chicago and I rarely see anything above 91. Also a warning to other Chicago drivers. Know your gas station well. As a former manager of one I can tell you that most city gas stations cheat and put the lowest octane gas in all tanks. I personal drive to Lake County for my gas (much lower prices because of sales tax)<p>Stu Koch
