Default Hit it or Quit it?

Car: 1997 A4 1.8t Quattro - 104k miles

Situation: Oil sludge and/or overly tight oil filter (from oil change service) = low oil pressure = engine ticking + metal shavings in pan and blown turbo

Circumstance Just got new turbo shipped, looking to replace mine on Monday. First off, is this something that can replaced by someone of moderate mechanical experience? Second, after I replace the turbo I am weary as whether to sell my baby and take my losses, or take a risk and continue to stay with my car. After I sucessfully install my turbo, all of the issues will be resolved and it will be "good as new!" However, either the engine is going to run for another 100k (like intentioned), or for another 10 miles.

Now, I have been reccomended Auto-RX with phenominal results. I wanted to gain some opinions from you guys before I made a decision. Thanks in advance!

I've never changed a turbo on an Audi, but its a simple device, its just a matter of getting to it. In most cases though it ain't easy. I'd search around for a Bentley manual if I were you.

I don't think an engine cleaner is going to save your engine's internals from metal shavings though. But, you might be lucky. Seems like the return oil from the turbo would pass though the filter before going back through the engine's oil passages. You probably don't want to run the engine at all until you can drop the oil pan and clean it out and fill with fresh oil.

Good Luck Though!

I'd swap in a new oil pump too. That's probably the problem with the low pressure.

If you are going to go through all the troubles of a new turbo install you will want to ensure that no more metal shavings exist in your motor. You should also try to locate where the shavings came from. First things first, drop the oil pan and clean it, also clean the pick up tube. If sludge has been haunting you for some time it will be made obvious once your drop the pan. If sludge is present you will want to change the oil pump.

If that all checks out, drain everything and install the turbo. The blocks on these cars run for a very long time if they are taken care of!

We carry new oil pumps for a very good price. To for details and pricing, click here

If there were metal shaving in the pan, the engine may be shot, in my opionion. unless you are sure all of the metal was from the turbo's bearing, the metal came from the crank and rod bearings, thus the low oil pressure and ticking.

Oops, I failed to mention I took it to a local foreign specialty shop to identify the problem, and they dropped the oil pan cleaned it. Unfortunately the dumbass customer service personnel whom I dealt with when picking up my car had no record of the shavings description other than they were present. The pressure is back to normal now with no more sound of ticking. The ticking comes from there being no oil at the top of the cylinders (from no pressure) and metal-on-metal action.
