Default I have a mystery coolant leak... any suggestions...

The leak is intermitent and my mechanic couldn't locate any leak what so ever. Checked the usual stuff like the resevoir, radiator, water pump, but could not find the leak at all. I find it amazing they couldn't find anything considering I managed to drain the whole resevoir in only 30 minutes of driving. Any suggestions on where they leak may be. It is a 1998 2.8QM

Default have you checked your oil?

Other than that you may want to check the radiator hoses to make sure they arent loose.

Default Wow! Here's an idea......

Run it hot, then shut the engine off. Put a coolant system pressure tester on in place of the reservoir cap & pressurize the system to 15 psi. Check it every 15-20 minutes, meanwhile take out the spark plugs. Once it's cooled down, look & see if there's any coolant accumulating on top of the pistons.

That, and the heater core are the only things that won't necessarily leave residue under the hood. I would think someone would notice the smell if your heater core was bad, so head gaskets is my next guess. That or a blind mechanic ;-)

Default Check the hose connections on the coolant tank.

One of the nipples might be cracked...and coolant vapor might be leaking out.

Default Re:I'll 2nd the head gasket idea.

Check and see if your oil is mixed with the coolant. If its burning it , then you should see white smoke and the exhaust has a sweet smell to it. The pressure test is a good idea.
