Default Idle problems

Every morning I get in my car & start it & the tach jumps up to 1000-1200rpms, then plummets to 200-300rpms & will die if I don't give it a little gas. So I do give it gas for about 5-10 seconds, let off the gas & the tach drops to 800rpms, then stabilizes & gradually raises to 1000-1100rpms. Then when I start driving, the car is very sluggish until it warms up.

All of this only happens if the car has been sitting for awhile i.e. overnight. If the car has been sitting for 4-5 hours there's no problem at all. Also my car is idling at 1300-1400rpms once warmed up, & I'm sure that's too high. I've changed my oil from 10w30 to 5w30 in an effort to alleviate the problem, but to no avail. Any suggestions? TIA!

1300-1400 sounds way to high. Should be around 800-900.

Default Try cleaning two things...

One, you throttle body port is probabaly caked up and globbed w/ oil.

Two, your Idle Control Valve. Both of these things can always use a cleaning.

Also check all your vacuum hoses for leaks, replace them anyway.

Link to clean your ICV

Default Are you chipped? My car used to do the exact same thing with the chip swapped in before...

the dealer replaced the failing MAF sensor. I haven't swapped the chip back in since the sensor was replaced 2 weeks ago. I have the 1.8T engine BTW.

Default Do it.

It may help.

During the "almost" stalling periods, the CEL light never came on?
