Default Assuming that the car was given its regularly scheduled maintainance...

...and it wasn't beaten to death, the turbo should be good. However, that doesn't mean it's infallible. You have to understand that a turbo has a hard life being put through thermal and loading cycles for the duration of it's use.

Somethings to help the turbo perserve its longevity is too switch to synthetic as it is less susceptible to thermal breakdown and ensuring that your turbo is properly lubricated during normal operation. Another thing is properly cooling down the turbo by letting it idle a minute or two after a long or hard run. This will prevent coking in the turbo clogging oil lines.

Default you can get a spare KKK03 used for dirt cheap..

Or rebuild it cheap, or go find that vortex group buy on K04 for $845 and have some peace huh?

It's not like the turbo is going to cost That much when/if it goes.. Good reason to upgrade huh?

Default It should be fine as long as

Using synthetic oil will definately help a lot as it will not break down as easily at high temp. Also correctly cooling down the car after hard driving will protect the turbo instead of just turning off the car imediately.

By chipping you will be putting a lot extra pressure on the turbo so it's life will naturaly be reduced, but man what fun it is, and as long as you go for a well known chip GIAC APR things will be fine.

ANd if a turbo does go, then it's a simple change to go for a K04, or even another K03 again, a hell lot cheaper than going for a new car.

Just my 2cents.

Default Unfortunately you don't know how the turbo has been treated for 45K....

If it makes you feel better, my '97 1.8T is about to hit 75K, it's been chipped since 20K, I use Mobil 1 every 7.5K, I let it cool after hard drives, I've taken it to the track and I don't forsee it dying anytime soon. Drives like new to me.

Hopefully, your car was treated well by the previous owner.
