intermittent led display problem
Hi, I hope this is in the right place as I'm not sure where to post it. I bought my 1999 A4 from a different dealer than I have it serviced by. I complained to the dealer about the LED display fading(the one that lists the temperature, etc.) a year after I bought the car. They couldn't duplicate the problem and therefore said there was nothing they could do. The problem was intermittent and continued. Every maintenance visit I complained and they claimed they could never duplicate the problem. The first 3 years it was under the service agreement. It's now 4+ years old, the problem is worse than ever and the service agreement expired. Now they tell me that this is a known problem, but I'm out of luck because the service agreement expired. I have to pay to replace the computer, about $700. I have all my receipts and my complaint about the LED is documented on every visit. I've talked to the owner and service manager, as well as Audi USA, all to no avail. Am I wrong in thinking this should be fixed at no charge? Is it a widespread problem?

ummmm, for the custer, what parts are not bright? If you take off your cluster there are some bulbs in the back, there could be false contact and that could make it do that. Or maybe one of them is about to die. When I installed my rings, I noticed that my light was out, and I replaced it. Dont know if this helps you much, but if you need help taking off the cluster email me, i can help ya out.

I had the same problem, and it was temperature related (+80 deg F would cause fading). I made sure to state the conditions under which the problem occured, and the dealer replaced it while still under warranty.
It is a common problem and they should honor the warranty since it was a documented complaint a while back.
Keep bugging Audi USA, send them copies of all of the service documents which show the complaint and lack of replacement. Keep bugging them and moving up the ladder until they cover the costs. It is not your fault that the dealer service department could not duplicate a problem that is common.
