KEY PROGRAMMING.............
Hello,
I lost my previous Audi keys for my 98.5 A4. I picked up new keys from the dealer today: one switchblade key and one master key. They just told me that it was going to cost a fortune for them to program both keys. Does anyone know how to program the keys?????

Yeah you can do it yourself... lets see if i remember this off the top of my head.
You need both keys to work.
Put switchblade in ignition
turn to accessory
roll your window down
put the masterkey in the drivers door with the door shut (you probabbly on the inside)
turn the masterkey so the doors lock
press "Unlock" on the switchblade key
(Nothing will happen)
Unlock the doors with the masterkey (all of them, so turn it twice)
Lock them again with the masterkey
Press "Unlock" again with the switchblade key, that time they should unlock.
Your key is now programmed.
Put switchblade in ignition

I think you need to code them seperately...
and I think there is 5 positions in the coding for up to 5 remotes. The tech article I used covers 97, that has a seperate remote(not a switchblade) but the coding is the same steps. I updated to a switchblade or flipkey and recoded using the directions below. One was already coded, so I only needed to code the one flipkey. If that first one you have is not coded either, you probably have to repeat the steps to code it. You don't have to remain in the car for coding. Would this work for the 99.5? Need to program the wife's key. Just came back from a VW dealer and-
they decided not to cut new keys from my blanks because they were hardened steel. Didn't want to break the bit so they directed me to a lock and key place that could do it. They laughed and said the could not and added I wasn't the first one sent there from Hanson VW in Olympia Wa.

Yes. Are you not using the typical blanks?
I can't understand why that dealer won't cut the blanks if they are the OEM type key blank. Most lock and key places do not have that machine to cut the square in-cut blanks. I realize there are a few out there, few and far in between, that rent the machine that can cut those. VERY expensive machine though that does those cuts.

LOL ..the write-up has been in the Tech section since 1997.
Much of the info in the BSK Faq is duplicated info from years ago. I used the original writeup in 1997 when I had to recode. None the less, I still think the BSK Faq section is a great idea and should be linked at the top of this forum.
