Default Koni's, replace or adjust? Need input...long

After 30,000 miles on my Koni Sports with Eibach srings and R-28's, the ride seems to have become some what poorer than it was. I have had them at the mid positions, front and rear and they have been great. I have pulled the wheels after a spirited drive to check for leaks and found none. I have bounced the front end to check for noise and found none. The car has a little more wallow (a little like the stock set-up)and seems harsher over rough road surfaces, than it has been. My question is; replace with new, or crank down to full firm. I called Koni they said to adjust them firmer(they recomended 1/4, to 1/2, turn), I am thinking of going full firm to avoid doing this again in the near future, what do any of you think? BTW, I called Rapid parts to see if they would remove and adjust them for me (I am willing to pay)and they said, not unless I bought mew ones! They did not even ask me if I bought them from them, does this mean if you buy shocks from them, and they need adjustment($$$)they will not do it unless you lay out money for new?

Default I'm going to replace mine with Bilsteins...

I thought about adjusting them, but decided it isn't worth the hassle. Everyone on the forum with Bilsteins seems to be happy with them. You can get the Bilstein Sports at www.shox.com for $449 (set of 4). HTH.
CraigB

www.shox.com

Default Re: Bilsteins are good shocks, but have less damping than the Koni's ...

People who I trust said to go with the Bilsteins if ride quality is your main concern, Andrew Moffit from Camra Motorsport, felt I will be unhappy with them if I am used to the Koni's, and I trust him, he says the Koni's have firmer damping.

Maybe I'll give the Koni adjustment a go then. Thanks for the info.

Default Re: Koni's, don't give up the fight!...

Koni's have a pretty short lifespan due to the seal design. You actually got a lot more out of them than many Ax'ers. They make three basic performance adj. models, a small diameter, a large diameter euro, and a race series. They are great shocks, just firm them up until they leak and then get them rebuilt by true choice.

Default Sounds like the Eibachs may be a problem...

When your springs go soft, you are getting wallow. I'm replacing Eibachs with my custom Konis. Although the Konis are not the off-the-shelf sport shock (mine are race valved) My Eibachs have not done as well as hoped. You may improve your ride if you went with a better matched spring & spring rate.
-Cathleen

Default clarification...

In my fast reply I should have said more clearly, I am replacing my Eibach springs that I currently have mated to my custom Konis. Actually, I'm going to do the full coilover conversion with Vortrag's custom valved Koni/custom rate Hypercoil Spring coilover.
Hope that's clearer.
-C.

Default Re: The ride has been great...

Untill a few miles ago, the ride has been perfect.I am convinced the Eibachs and Koni are a good match, for the street, as they preformed well for about 29000, miles. So far every tech I spoke with says to adjust them.

Default I didn't doubt that...

My setup was great too, in the first year. You can certainly do an adjustment and that would certainly be of some help but you mentioned you have a wallowy ride too. From that description I took it to mean you get body roll when cornering. If that's the case, then it's a function of your springs.
My point was to share with you my experience with my Koni/Eibach setup that has had a loss in handling through an increase in body roll over time because the Eibach springs are softening. After you increase the stiffness on your shocks and you still have body roll, you would might want to consider getting new springs. My shocks are fine but since my springs went soft, (too quickly, in my opinion) I plan to get a longer lasting/better spring.
-Cathleen
