But why did BMW and Toyota not race this year?
Not to take anything away from Audi, but the absence of the 1-2 finishers from last year's race seemed odd. I'm guessing BMW is focusing its attention on F1 right now.

They couldn't afford the $100 million Audi spent....
Also once a company wins LeMans they quit racing for a year or two to capitalize in ads that they have won it! Why jepoardize your standing in th world.

This is Audi's golden opportunity...
BMW is in F1 in a big way (i.e.-$$$$), not to mention what Rover cost them. Toyota, after withdrawing from the WRC this year will be entering F1 next year.
This is Audi's golden opportunity to dominate sportscar racing. They could make quite a name for themselves if they could win Le Mans 3 out of the next 4 years. And, the next 4 years of sportscar racing would cost less than 2 years of F1.
Competition? Today, winning against tough competition means something, tomorrow it doesn't. Porsche won Le Mans 17 times, most of those were won against private teams racing Porsches. You ask the "average" guy on the street who makes the best race cars and most of them will say: Porsche. He doesn't know what type of cars or what class they ran in, all he knows is Porsche = race success.
And, lets face it, the "average" guy buys most of the cars...
