Default Lock to lock

How many turns lock-to-lock is the steering on a 2001 A4? Does the sport package provide a tighter steering ratio, or is it unchanged from that of the "stock" system?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Default only the s4 has a tighter ratio, the sort is the same. tooo much trouble to change.

how much would a new rack and pinion set cost of an S4. is that all that would have to change. or would the steering arms and conecting rods have to go to.<p>A41.8TSCT

Default Hold on... my 98 1.8tq has quicker steering than S4

Yes, Audi Marketing talks about the quicker steering ratio of the S4, but somehow my 98.5 1.8tqms has 2.8 turns lock-to-lock and the specs for the S4 (in the Audi world guide and several magazine tests) indicate 3.1 turns. The S4 specs show a larger turning circle than a4, (11.4 m vs 11.1 m. I wonder if Audi fitted the 1.8t's with quicker steering because the front end is so much lighter. I tried to find out from AoA but they wouldn't answer and sent me to the dealer. By the way, the RS4 is touted as having even quicker steering-- guess what: 2.75 turns!

If I were you, I wouldn't start swapping out steering racks for S$ until you check the ratios first. Marketing has been known to fudge a bit.

Default Poll: how many turns lock-to-lock does your A4/S4 have?

Indicate model, engine, quattro/nonquattro, sport pkg/nonsport. It would be interesting to see who has 2.8, who has 3.1.

Default Re: Hold on... my 98 1.8tq has quicker steering than S4

Charlie,
I've got a 2001 1.8t Avant with sport package on order. It should be here in a few weeks, but in the meantime, I'm left to dream.
My Z51 equipped C4 Corvette has exactly 2 turns lock to lock, but a "stock" 'Vette has 2.7 ... I began to wonder if Audi did similar things with their sport suspension. Thanks much for giving me an idea about the steering; I was unable to find this info anywhere.
Now that we're on the subject of abstract knowledge, what's the firing order of the 1.8t? Has it varied since the motor's inception, or always been the same?

Jim:

Don't know the answer on firing order... someone on this forum must though. Glad to find someone else curious about the steering. I have tried to raise it as an issue here without much success, and as I said, Audi has not been helpful. You raise an interesting possibility-- maybe sport package gets quicker ratio. Its interesting that Audi marketing also touts the S4's "lower suspension" but its actually taller than my 1.8t sport package.
