Looking for A4
Looking in to buying a 96 or 97 A4 being that it is an older car and the miles are normal going to be higher is there any certain problem that you have seen in this car that i should have to look out for ? Jen

I just picked up a '97 1.8T quattro with 69k miles. First think I did was have the timing belt and cam belt tensioners replaced. Everyone I talked to said that was about the most important service item to do.
You'll also want to know that in '98 they went to a different engine in the 6-cyl that many praise.
They started offering the tiptronic in '98 as well.

timing belt is one of the main concerns
utilize the search feature, there are a few common problems once the 12v(96-early 98)and 30v(98 to 2001) 2.8's and 1.8T(97-2001) get around 60k miles. There is a lot of info in the archives.
