If it's the check engine light (MIL) Could be anything
You need to get the code read. It's usually something with emissions.If it starts to flash you need to stop driving ASAP as you will damage the CAT. Most common reason is bad or cheap 87 octane gas or a loose gas cap. However with a car this old (I have the same year) could be many things depending on the mileage. You could buy the shareware VAG.com tool from OBDtool.com. Cheaper than a trip to the dealer.Then at least if you can't fix it yourself you will be able to find out cost of repair. There are probably people on this forum in your area who will diagnose this for you for a beer. Post a message on the forum looking for a VAG.com
