man what a difference a downpipe makes
I took Thursday and Friday off and drove to APR to replace my damaged downpipe; to recap my flex section bit the dust, causing a somewhat unhealthy exhaust sound coming from under the car. Apparently that combined with the odd shape of the flex section (my exhaust was the prototype for version 2) was creating some pretty bad exhaust gas turbulence. Once we put the new downpipe on the exhaust got quieter than its ever been, and it must flow a lot better with the flex section APR's been using ever since; my turbo actually spools up even faster and freed up some HP and torque with the increased flow. I honestly think it helped with the 13.6 I got last night.
On top of that, we finally got a chance to isolate a faint but horribly annoying rattle at low RPMs I've lived with for a few months. Today Johnny Bravo helped me find it...turns out the heat shield over the half shalf just below the cat/downpipe flange was loose and would resonate whenever I blipped the throttle. (Thanks a TON, dude!!)
Tonight I went out for a long drive; radio off, windows down, mid 70 temps for the first time in a while...it drives and sounds soooooo much better now. No more annoying rattle, no more exhaust leak; more torque and quicker spool up. <B>DAMN</B> I love this machine! You should see the smile on my face....<B>EAR TO EAR, BABY!!</B>

Same here...
Just curious if you feel the 2000 dbw A4 hinders the performance of the 1.8T compared to 99.5, or 2001.5 SIII. I've read different opinions on the subject and was wondering if you have had a chance to drive a SIII 99.5 or 2001.5? Haven't decided whether or not I'm going to pull the SIII trigger this spring or not.

I've ridden in a 99.5 stage 3...
I honestly think mine pulls just as hard. I got a 13.6 at 100.51mph last night with full car weight (only the spare was removed) and 25lb. 18" wheels in tough conditions (86ºF and extremely humid) and a bogged launch; with some launch practice and cooler/dryer temps I know I've got a low 13 second car. Especially now that I got the downpipe issue sorted out, the car just SCREAMS. I've got 30,000 miles with the kit and my dealer says the engine is as healthy as any stock 1.8T they service.
