milometer
so the milometer in my 96 a4 1.8t sport has never lit up, you can see the mileage sometimes when the sun hits it just so, or if you shine a torch on it, then, yesterday, it lit itself up! i was delighted! lol
anyways, went out in her today, and it didnt light up again.
tried with headlights, tried every combo of everything, but no.
so it obviously can work, but how do i make it a little more permanent?

I had the same problem with my back lighting on the climate control. I fixed it by using the good old fonzy method and hit it (whilst saying hey!). But eventually i had to replace the little globes. Replace the globes and connector (but only if you really need to).

i hit the top of the dash 'binnacle', knocked on the clear dash plastic, disbelievingly, the way a pilot about to run out of fuel might, but still nothing.
i went to a breakers yard to try and get the bits required before, and it looked like a very complicated little bank of led's. but it was an a6 i was taking to bits.
mine is an early a4, will it be a simple bulb, or led's?

It's backlit by a incandescent bulb. Replace the bulb and all the other IC bulbs while you're at it.
You are talking about the odometer and trip mileage display, not the big display in the middle, right?
