Default Modifying air filter

Anyone try to use a cone filter instead of OEM box? I believe TAP has one, but I think I can modify the box to accomodate a cone filter with a horn inside or even a cold air setup... Anyone have any thought of this? I think it will be possible to gain a 1-2 Hp from this setup..
Dmak 1.8TQMS

Default I know of two people

Edmund Louie had it on his car and took it off..I would contact him for details as to why. Lyle Ferguson also does. I do not suggest it without changing the ducting system on the car. It can increase the temperature of the air entering the engine...hence robbing the car of the extra horsepower you are trying to get. Remember your car wants cool air to breathe..not hot.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
"Air Filters Will Travel"

Why spend the time to modify the intake box. Just buy a K & N drop in air filter or RAM air filter. They work just fine!

Default heat

Just wondering: Wouldn't our intercooler take care of any overly heated air that goes into the engine. Also, isn't the intake air just going to be super heated anyway by our red hot turbos, cone or no cone? I could see on a normally aspirated car how a cone would loose horsepower but on a turbo and intercooled car I would think the difference in intake temp wouldn't make much difference. What am I missing?
Faithfully,
George
97 1.8TqAS TAPII
94 911 Carrera 4

Default Haven't you noticed how...

Haven't you noticed in really hot weather that the car is just not going very fast. I am definitely no expert in how turbos work, but I thought it had to do with hot...(and probably damp) air adversely affecting the turbos effectiveness. Hey, why doesn't one of our turboheads chime in here?...I am outta my league.
Normally Aspirated Steve
97 2.8QM
OK, once forum-god Steve mentions my name, i am oblidged to respond. . . *heh heh*.
Well, once i give you my experiences with the cones and induction systems of the sort, let me remind you that i have a 2.8 (30V) and i'm sure results will vary between that and your engine, the 4-banger. That being said. ..
go to my webpage by clicking on this line.
There's a good amount of info there that i've compiled about my various experiences with the A4 - i haven't updated it in awhile, but it definently has stuff as well as pics on the intake cone i did.
NOW, onto my assessment of cone filters now that i've tried everything under the sun....the K&N cone added more power at 3000 rpm+. It definently had a bit more "grab and go" kinda feel to it, especially in 2nd and 3rd over the stock paper setup. However, part throttle and low rpm situations would go to the stock airbox - the fact that the cone grabs slightly hotter air (about 20-30F hotter) and what i term "a lack of air reserve" makes the off-idle response sluggish with the cone. See, i have a feeling that with the airbox the car has a larger volume of filtered air available to it, hence giving it better part-throttle response, over a cone which is just 3" piping into the throttle body.
I just popped in the K&N panel filter a couple days ago. . . i know this sounds retarded, but i think there is a difference. Off-idle isn't much different, but starting around 2800, it feels like the car goes a little bit more. . .accompinied by a little more induction noise. Oh, let me go off on a tangent here...the cone is LOUD in the car. VERY LOUD. It's cool, lots of people thought i had an exhaust on the car just by the way it sounded. But anyways....the car feels a bit peppier all around, and, unlike the cone, i don't have to suffer from lackster off-idle response (which is magnified during the summer, when the car is baking).
However, with ALL this being said, it could be different for turbos, so i'll shut up now. . . but i feel that i've given a reasonable account on how it goes for the 30V. ..
HTH,
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V

Absolutely correct, Steve! All you suck is hot air with a cone and hot air "not good" for turbo performance! Turbos like realy cool dense air!

Stick with apanel filter, just go to a performance filter. I use K&N, but there are others.
