need help with engine problem
See if it's the same problem.
It also could be caused if you had your gas tank lid open while the car was running. It sucks air in, and thus causes problem. Not sure what the solution in this case is.
Hope this helps
A VAG Tool emulator will be able to retrieve the error codes that triggered the engine light which should give you an idea of what is wrong. Many people will do this for you for free (or maybe a beer or two, or a donut).
Hopefully somebody with a link to the registry will speak up. In fact, I need to add myself to it...

After I got it back to Houston, I took it to the dealer and all it was a temperature gauge had malfunctioned... nothing too major. Obviously you will have to get it fixed anyway. So I would just take it in.
Since your warranty is out, I wouldn't take it to the dealer unless you feel like you can't trust anyone else to do it right.
Another lesson. ALWAYS BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! I bought my 96 A4 12v used from the dealer with 33k miles. I paid $1700 extra for the extended warranty. I am now at 85k miles and it has paid for itself 3x over! If anyone plans on keeping their audi past 50k an extended warranty is essential, and a bargain compared to the alternative.
