More:

3X4 is based on the new BMW 3 series, US will have the new 228hp 3.0L engine (same engine will be used in the V6 X5 SUV). The AWD is dev.w/ Land Rover (which BMW owns)

Cx4 will be based on the new C class pictured in prev. AW mags. looks pretty cool. the AWD is based on the E class 4matic.

(both do not have any pics)

I'm sure both will be $3-5K more than the new '01 A4Q.

Remember the 80's? Everyone had AWD... and only Audi and Subaru systems are still around.

Everyone trys to jump on the bandwagon...

BMW had the 3 and 5 ix, MB had the 4matic.
Ford made a 4wd Tempo, Mazda had the awd 323 (cool car).
GM made a Pontiac 6000 STE w/ AWD.
Honda had some 'realtime' system.
Toyota made some Corollas and Camrys with AWD (and a Celica).
Mitsu uses AWD in its high performance cars.
There are others, but I think you get the point.

By the early 90's, only Audi and Subaru were marketing AWD.
