Is this normal?

I received my A4 about two weeks ago w/ the sports pkg and premium pkg. I love the car but something weird happened last night. I was out driving, not hard at all, and when I got home I decided to look under the hood. The car was still running when I looked under the hood. The lighting was not very good but I did notice somthing that I thought was not normal. To the left side of the engine block and just below it was glowing red hot. I wasn't sure if it was the exhaust manifold or part of the turbo. All the gauges read OK but should something be red hot? I called a dealer today and the guy in the service department said that it was the exhaust manifold and the it was normal. Has anyone else out there experienced anything similar.

That's your turbo. It's normal.

You say it's the turbo but the service guy said it was the exhaust. The thing was friggin glowing.

No biggie. I've done dyno testing on engines (non-turbos)...

And on some pretty routine driving conditions, we'd have 4 to 5 feet of exhaust pipe glowing bright red. It's normal.

The archives are full of posts like yours...it's the turbo, and it's normal.

And once you see your turbo glowing like that, you begin to appreciate the merit of turbo cool-down.

I know its normal for the turbo to glow after a hard drive, but what about the exhaust manifold?
