Default Oil problems

Yesterday pretty much all my oil leaked out of my car. I started it , ran inside to grab my stuff and came out. I opened my door and then i heard a gurgling noise. I immediately shut the car off and looked underneath to see oil pouring onto the ground. I took a quick look and saw that the oil looked like it was coming from where the oil filter screws onto.

Before i rip my car apart looking for the exact problem is there anything i should look at first? Its a 98 1.8tQM chipped. Everything was fine up untill this happened AFAIK.

Default Pull off your valve cover and pull a cam bearing cap from the front side of the motor (farthest from

oil source) and inspect for damage. You will need to take off your oil filter, replace the oil cooler o-ring and retighten oil filter union and nut and install new oil filter and oil.

was/is the filter tight? check to see if the nut for the oil cooler is loose.

Default That used to be an issue with the late 1980's VW 1.8 engine. Oil pressure relief valve stickage.

Happened in cold weather. Check your oil pressure too.

Default I had that happen with a cheap filter back in my college days

I only use OEM for my Audis now

oil filter is tight. i think it may be the oil cooler.

Default There is an o-ring behind the oil cooler. This can degrade and fail catastrophically...

...resulting in a rapid oil dump. After STFA-ing and finding the horror stories, I just replaced mine yesterday, because I've had what looks like an oil leak pooling under the oil filter. The old ring was hard, not pliable, but it wasn't broken, so I don't know whether that was the cause. Tough to tell whether the leak has stopped - it almost looks like the oil cooler itself is leaking at the seam, but I don't know whether that should be possible - does the coolant "jacket" surround the oil "jacket" in the oil cooler, or is it the other way around? There's no oil/coolant mixing that I've been able to detect, so it's not an internal crack.

Default Check the Oil Pressure switch too!

Its located above the oil cooler.

Default Update: Its the oil cooler seal. Trying to find it locally but it doesnt like like its happening.

Seems to be a pretty easy job.
