Out of alignment - really bad ...

I went in for service today and I requested my car to be aligned. I've been noticing that the car was pulling to the left and there was more road noise that I have been accustomed to. The worst part of it is that my rear left wheel seems to be pointing inwards as if it wanted to turn right. I bet this is what made the car want to pull left. I'm just wondering how much damage this can cause to: 1. my tires, and 2. anything mechanical. <p>I've never seen this before in any other cars that I've owned. Maybe it can be attributed to Quattro but I'm just not sure. I guess I'll find out. Anyone here have that problem before? Well, at least they gave me a '99 A6 QT for a loaner ... kinda makes the worry go away for a bit.<p>John Costin<br>98.5 A4 2.8QM

Had the same problem with my '98.5 2.8 QMS. Too bad I didn't notice until the left tires were worn badly on the inside edge, and I've had to live with a loud noise for about 10k miles now. I wasn't told how bad it was out of alignment, but they did say it was out and did the alignment under warranty. Mine seemed to only be wearing the tires on the left side, but mine seemed to be more wear on the front. Of course this could have been after I rotated the tires, and just didn't notice. There is another post in the wheel and tire forum of a guy with a Passat who had the same problem with the left rear wheel wearing his tires. Most likely an alignment problem there as well.

Uneven tire wear part 2

I took my Passat to the dealer (Reeves in Tampa) today and they said that their is NO toe adjustment in the rear and the V.W. tec. line said that it should not be shimed. They told my dealer the axle should be replaced and my dealer needs to talk to the local rep. to see if it will be covered under waranty because the car has non oem springs.<br>

After service comments ... one day later. Dealer says alignment is perfect ...

I guess I have to watch the rear tires carefully for uneven wear. I still think it needs to be adjusted. Either that or the roads here in New Jersey are that bad. The tech manager said that they put the car up on the rack but found it to be within spec.
