Default Overheating problem

Hi, my car has been overheating. Most often when I stop, for a few minutes. Coolant gage goes up to the same place around 115C and then goes back gradually. If I rev then it goes back to normal quicker.

I took to service, mechanic has tested cooling system for pressure -OK. He concluded that Viscous fan is not working properly, suggesting replacement. My problem that it seamed a little expensive 350 for the part.

Anyone knows if this part can be repaired? I was told by someone that after sometime lube in that part evaporates ( or something like that ) and needs to be refilled. Any ideas?

Yea, go to the junkyard and get a used one. It's not normally a part that goes bad so just get a used one.

Oh and, you'll need a pretty thin adjustable wrench to grab that bolt behind the fan. Remember, the threads are backwards there so that the rotation of the motor tightens it.

Thanks man, that was not really an option as I am in NZ its only 4 million people here. And Audi A4 is not the most common car.

I ordered one from France.

Even so that was not the problem of overheating. Still does that.

I am assuming this is a 1.8t, remove the thermostat and check the waterpump. by removing the thermostat you can see and feel the impeller, It is fairly common for it to be either busted or come disconected from the shaft.

Goodness gracious,

Logic is what all of these are lacking. So the car overheats when stopped. It's not the fan. Check the fluid level is #1, low coolant level will get coolant a place to expand, however since it cools down when you are revving and not moving, that's probably not it. Thermostat, a thermostat opens when the temperature is high to allow more of the water to circulate to cool the engine, if it doesn't open enough, the water circulation speed is too slow and the system heats up...with the revving of the engine the pump moves water faster, so even through a thin opening the water moves better, however, i have found that even with revving, the car just ends up heating up more. It could be that with the extra water pressure that the thermostat is really forced to open and water begins to flow normally, but considering the hardness of the thermostat spring, i doubt it. Water pump, my favorite answer, if your driving and getting airflow around the radiator, even if this part is working like a dog, it will cool the car. If you are stopped, it's not doing a damn thing because it barely spins and with broken or corroded fins it can't do it's job. With higher revs it moves the water enough to cool it down.

How is your fuel consumption compared to the specs? If high there is a proble.
Is your transmission changing correctly? Is your timing OK? Are the brakes not "binding"? Is the piston compression OK?
Thanks for reply. The petrol consumption is fine for a V6. Transmission is ok, I have not felt anything abnormal. Timing is is fine I assume, as there was no reason for it to wrong. No jobs has been done that involve it's ajustment. Compression is also fine, I assume, as the engine is in good shape and done only 120k. Overheating has started to happen abruptly, rather then gradually.

Thanks for suggestions guys. I have changed the Viscous fan, the airflow has increased dramatically, so I do not regret changing this thing. But the temp gauge is still going up.

I have discovered that rubber seal is missing from the cap on the coolant expansion tank. Have ordered a new cap, fingers crossed. Mechanic said that this can be a possible cause as it the system does not hold the pressure.

Yep I have changed it, not myself. Somewhat helped, now its overheating only when I stop. Before I changed it the temperature could go up even if I was going 100km/h
