I didn't go for the most expensive setup by any means, but I tried to get a good balance of decent sound on a reasonable budget. Here's what I went with:
Alpine IDA-X001 Head Unit
Polk Audio 5.25" Co-Ax in the front
Kenwood Excelon 6.5" Co-Ax in the rear (had these left from my last car)
JBL GTO Dual Voice Coil 10" Sub
Profile 700m Mono Amp (350 RMS x1 @ 2 ohm)
Profile 740p 4 channel amp (60 RMS x4 @ 4 ohm)
I ran new wire for all the speakers. If I could do it over again, I would have just gone with Polk Audio components in the front. The 5.25" in front sound pretty good -- great budget speakers, but they didn't mount the easiest. I had to come up with a kind of ghetto rig with metal strapping, but they are in held firmly in place now.

Very nice. I'm the one who initiated the whole Alpine chat... :)
I'm satisfied with the Bose system, and my sub gives it some extra punch... but the deck is what pisses me off. If I could swap it out and maintain everything else (save the changer) I'd do it in a flash, especially considering what Alpine's offering.
