Pinging/Knocking Issues
I frequently see messages addressing pinging and knocking. Why do drivers notice this? I thought the purpose of the "knock sensors" was to monitor engine pinging/knocking and to adjust ignition timing/ air-fuel ratios etc. to prevent this. Is the engine management hardware not functioning correctly if pinging is heard?

The issue usually comes up if a performance chip has been installed...
Most complaints have come from individuals who have installed performance chips in the vehicles. Knocking is more likely to occur in hot climates or when lower ocatane fuels are used.
The performance chips generally require higher octane fuels (e.g., 92 or higher). As far as I know, knocking is not normally a problem with stock (unmodified) A4s.
