Default plastic engine covers: useless?

I'll be heading to Thunderhill Raceway on Feb 12 for my first high performance driving course. (woohoo!) This made me start thinking about things on my car I need to keep an eye on. Obviously, an important factor is heat. This made me think of the cosmetic plastic engine covers.

My question is: are they indeed just cosmetic? The two I have in mind are the big one over the main part of the engine, and the smaller cover over the intake section. Both of these covers just pop off, and it would seem that more air could flow over the engine if they weren't there.

Any problems with me just taking them off for good?
thanks!

Default For the main cover, I'd just as easily leave it there....

It is a water cooled engine, and air over the head is not really beneficial. The cover DOES help keep dirt off of the coil packs, and from maybe migrating down. If dirt collects there, then it's difficult to take out a plug without letting dirt drop into the cylinder....
