Default This or that? Please help!

Hi all,

My friend and I were browsing car dealerships, when all of a sudden we both spotted a black '01 Audi A4 Quattro sitting out in the lot. This car is a thing of beauty. Strangely enough, this was the only car out there without a price tag on it. We go online and find out it's about $9,000. Now I reeeeally want to jump on this opportunity and buy it, but I also found another black '01 A4 Quattro for a similar price.

Here are the main differences:

First car
======
Manual
99,717 miles
$8,995
======

Second car
======
Automatic
46,382 miles
$11,995
======

I checked the histories of each car and the only difference was that the first car had two previous owners, while the second car only had one previous owner. No accidents.

Which one do you guys think would be a better purchase? I prefer manual over auto and I'm not too worried about resale value if I ever sell it.

Thanks a ton,
Henry

1.8T or 2.8? Make sure the timing belt has been changed, especially on the higher mileage one.

Default 1.8T for both. Is the timing belt the #1 thing to be checked?

I'm just worried that 100k+ miles could result in breakdowns over and over, but then again Audis are built solidly.

Default HAHH AH AHHH AHHA HA SNORT!

Audis built solidly?

Lemme tell ya upfront, unless you are loaded or a DIY'er, this is not the car for you. It will *always* have at least one thing broken at all times.

Jeez. That doesn't sound too appealing. How much are you guys spending extra to constantly repair?

Default Most of us do our own work.

But you will, with either car, need a complete timing belt job. Do *not* trust anyone that it has been done. Call that $1200.

And control arms are gonna go bad, another $1200.

Default Wooow.

Sounds like I would end up paying for the car all over again within a few years. Not looking good.

Default Well, if you're looking at low cost maintenance and reliability...

then keep looking... in the direction of Toyota or Honda.

People don't buy used Audis if they want reliability and inexpensive maintenance. Audis are purchased for other reasons.

Default Both of those can be 900 jobs. Or 300 and roughly 500 if DIY. I've had control arms done on two A4

's though, same shop both times, only change was labor rate went up by 5 bucks inbetween the jobs (2 years difference). Both were about 900 though and timing belt job was going to be 850 w/ them supplying all parts coolant etc. Either way they are rather expensive is the point. I am mixed, I do some work myself and I have a shop do the rest. Really depending on how much time etc I have, I've done my own timing belt yet have shop do oil changes for me. At 40 bucks out the door, I'm fine with not getting all messy etc.
