Power steering leak

I have to add power steering fluid once a day in order to avoid a metallic whining noise when i start the car and turn the wheel, my mechanic says the leak is actually coming from the rack and pinion and that i need to replace it, at a cost of $1800 dollars. I dont understand why the whole steering rack would need to be replaced just to fix a leak.. anyone have any experience with this?

its a B5 2.8 quattro

Because the rack is leaking. Not uncommon or unheard of. That price seems awfully high though, is that the dealer?

not the dealer just a local shop. what is a reasonable price and if i continue to maintain the fluid level how long can i put off replacing the rack? is there no way to just patch the rack?

No, you cannot "patch" the rack. What year is your car? I can look up the rack PN and see if you can get it for a better price then what the mechanic wants.

Okay, so I found out you have a '96 which is the ZF rack. A rebuilt unit from the dealer, PN 8D1-422-052-CX, is $640.
