Default question about engine temp ...

Driving to work today, I watched my temp gauge (coolant) slowly decreased to the 'C' and then slowly come back to normal. It cycled a few times like that. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas?!? The oil temp held exactly where it always does. At lunch, when the car is cool, I'll double check the coolant level to make sure it, and the resevior (sp?) are both at normal level.

I'd love to hear if anyone has any othe suggestions.

Thank,
Frank

Default How many miles? Chances are your coolant temp sensor is ready to go...

The part cost me about $32 and is a simple DIY...
Make sure the engine is cool and you loosen the coolant tank cap before taking this out or else you'll cause a mini-geyser when replacing this part. There is a little horseshoe clip you you slide off to get the sensor out.

Here's where it should be located on a 1.8T

It's the blue module.

53000 miles, it's a 2001 A4 1.8TQ.

Will I lose coolant while changing the sensor? Is it threaded with a gasket?

Default Just buy the rubber O-ring with the sensor.

Unplug the connector first by pinching the metal wire holder in. Then slide out the clip using a flat head screwdriver to help pry it off. Once both are off, simply wiggle the sensor out. There is a little suction pressure so you have to twist and pull a little. Once you get that out, some coolant will pop out but then settle. Make sure to get the O-ring out if it didn't come off with the sensor. Simply replace the new one and reverse the procedure. Voila...you're done. Dealer would've charged around at least $80 for that I think.

Since the location is higher, you will only lose a little coolant. You can just add some distilled water to the tank. I lost very little and wound up adding a half cup of distilled water when I replaced mine.

Mine went at 65k. It has been known to fail around our range. Your car will still run fine.
