Rear Suspension Creaking

I've got a 1999.5 2.8Q (non-sport suspension), and lately there's been some creaking from the rear suspension on both sides. I'm thinking it might be the sway bar bushings, because it's not particularly loud, and only seems to happen when there's decent suspension compression. Small bumps don't do this. It's pretty much equal noise from both sides. I'm hoping it's not the shocks, though. The tricky part is that it doesn't happen all the time, and seems to change with the weather. I'm in CT, and we get some rather large humidity and temperature fluctuations this time of year, but the noise is starting to happen more frequently, and it's bothering me. It's definitely not driveline or brakes. Anyone have suggestions/prior experience on what this might be, and recommendations on what to do about it?

That sounds like what I had before Audi replaced my upper control arms on both sides at 75K miles.

The cheapest solution is to follow your hunch with the swaybar

bushings. Get some white lithium grease, put the car up on jackstands, remove the brackets and bushings, spray them down, reassemble, and go for a spin.
