Default Refueling problems..

For the past two weeks I've tried to fill up my gas tank but I've come across the same problem.
The gas pump constantly stops pumping gas after filling up for about 10 seconds. I have to constantly press the pump lever everytime the pump stops. Feels like my gas tank is giving off pressure against the gas pump and thus causing this problem. First time this problem occured was when I was just about on the empty line and tried to fill up my tank. Prior to this I had no problems. Last time I tried to refill I wasn't even near the empty line and this problems has not gone away. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for all your inputs.
Chris K
98.5 1.8TQTS Tap Stage II

Default Try this...

Maybe the nozzle is too far down the fillup pipe. Occasionally, gas may actually be forced up into the nozzle under pressure and cause the auto shut off feature. Try inserting the nozzle only 3/4 or 1/2 way down the fill up pipe and see what happens. The pump on the gas island may be shooting the gas out too fast. IMHO though...
Rob

Default Rob is right...(more)

The gas may be coming up too fast. Instead of giving a full squeeze at the trigger... try 3/4 position. In my experience, I didn't have to pull the nozzle out though.
Cris
Default This is normal? (more)

From what I understand, I thought if you run the car on empty for a while this causes a air pocket in the tank which may cause this problem. However, the air pocket did not seem to go away. I'm sure what Rob and Cris told me to do works, but is this normal? How long will I need to continue to pump gas like this? If I need to pump the gas like this everytime it doesn't seem normal. I do not know if this can be attributed to the gas coming out too fast because I've tried pumping at different gas stations. Any thoughts?
Chris K
98.5 1.8TQTS Tap Stage II

Default Yes it is...

because it has happened with every car I own. If it "trips" in the first couple of seconds after you begin fuelling, just let it come out either 3/4 flow or move the nozzle back out the pipe a bit more. Either way, it will take care of the problem. I have no idea about the air pockets but they may contribute to this annoying problem.
Rob

Default NO it is not

I have had this problem only at certain gas stations. It is not related to the speed of the delievery. The gast station I used to go to, the gas comes out painfully slow. However, it also has the fuel recovery system which couples a plastic boot to the inlet pipe. It is very difficult to has sustained pumping.
However, if I go to other gas stations, I don't have any problems ever. Try to go to a station that does not have the fuel vapor recovery system, or one that is set up correctly.

Default I had the same problem too (more)

I had that same problem a month or two ago. It happened at any gas station I went to and it would stop a couple of seconds after pulling the handle.
It's VERY annoying tryin got fill 14 gallons into a tank when you can get max 1/2 gallon each squeeze.
Pulling the trigger a little would let it get further along, but it would stop again. I found out that if I pulled the nozzle out a little (like the other suggestions) would allow it fill all the way without any problems (maybe stop once)
Surprisingly, the problem has completely gone away now. I have however, moved across country tho, so my experience is definately not scientifically sound
Default An alternative fix if the nozzle has a vapor retention collar

This happened to me several times in NJ, where anti-pollution regs require pump nozzles to be fitted with a rubber collar to prevent fumes from escaping into the atmosphere. The fix is to manually pull the collar back an inch or so, breaking the seal and allowing the air pressure to escape. You only need to do this for ten or so seconds, after which the tank should fill up normally.
