Default Remote security unit

Hello all, I just bought a '96 Audi A4 2.8 last week. It did not have the remote door/security control as the original owner "lost" it. The lot owner told me that all I would have to do is go to the local Audi dealer and get a remote and have them reprogram the system. Well I bought the remote ($150!) and then went over to service to have them reprogram it. He told me that something else was wrong and I would have to schedule an appointment to have it checked out. He didn't seem like the brightest guy in the world so I was wondering if anybody had any ideas? I read a message from '99 that told the exact procedure on how to reprogram yourself.. I did it with no success.

Default Re: Remote security unit

The remote was an option for the 96' model year. If the original owner didn't order the car with the remote, then the car isn't wired for the remote. I decided to have an aftermarket alarm installed instead which works extremely well. My car is also a 96' 2.8 Q.

Default 96 has a different system.....

Here is the precedure for setting up the 96 remote system. You can't change the options like the newer systems, but you still need to program it to respond to the keyfob. This procedure assumes that you have the keyless entry option factory installed, and are just adding a new fob. You can do it at home. You will need 2 keys.

1. Put 1 key in the ignition and turn it on. (Don't start the car, just turn it on until the dash lights up.
2. Roll down drivers side window. (You don't really have to do this, but I'd hate to lock my key in the car)
3. Take the second key and lock the car using the drivers door.
4. Hold BOTH buttons on the remote until the turn signals flash and the door unlocks. It should take about 5 seconds or less. Bingo!

To program the second remote, open the door, turn the ignition off and back on, lock the door and hold both buttons on the second remote until the lights flash and the door unlocks.

By the way, even if the system works, it never works very well, and the range is about 20 feet from the car. I have installed an aftermarket system in my 96, and I'm really happy with it. If you want info on the aftermarket installation, check out my web page at:

How to replace the remote on a 96 A4
