Default remote starters

My son just called and wanted to know if a remote starter on his B5 w/ tip is a bad idea. GF gave him one for Christmas but he is concerned about messing with the car.

We generally don't recommend them as they don't really warm up your car.

Default I had one installed on my last car

I'd use it from time to time just to show off. I eventually figured out that all it really did was start the car and that was about it.

The car never got to the point where it was warm enough for heat to come out of the HVAC, it saved me maybe 3-4 seconds of cranking the engine, and just seemed like a total waste of gas to me.

Default Yeah, the only thing its really good for is getting the A/C going during the summer

Will remote starting the car bring it up to "real" operating temperature? No. It might help things get warmer more quickly, though I don't think its worth spending money on just to get that, you're better off just going outside yourself and starting it. Also, the last thing you need is some hacker install guy hacking your wiring up.

Yeah, that too. It looked like I had a missile launcher on my car with all the wiring.

Default Not a bad idea since you have a tip. Hard to steal since Audi invented the shift lock (because of

the 5000 fiasco), so a would be thief would need your key to engage out of Park anyway. And you won't have to worry about keeping it in gear to accidentally bump the car infront (or behind) you.

Default huh? It's not safe to start an engine and immediately apply load. Sure it will warm up faster that

way, at the expense of non optimal oil viscosity.
