Default Remoting a V1

Anyone try disassembling a V1 so that the sensors can be buried at appropriate locations, and the logic box stashed somewhere, and then the remote display used to monitor what's going on?
I don't want to windshield mount my detector, because it has a tendency to make you look guilty to the cops, even if you are not. My car is laser red, and that already makes it a cop target. If it was gray with wood grain panels on the side, I would worry less... But it would be butt-ugly...
Thanks,
1999.5 1.8Tqms

Default Had the same question...

Radar detectors are illegal here, so I am definately interested in a stealth angle. If I get around to doing anything I will post.
I think proper shielding would be the number one problem. Number two problem would be prositioning for good radar coverage.
TTFN,
Gordon Martin
98.5 2.8QMS (Santorin Blue)
Default Remoting methodology

I haven't cracked open a V1, so I do not know what it looks like inside. I assume there are diodes for the laser detector elements, and waveguides for the radar receivers. I also assume them to be on one PCB, so remoting means removing.
Simply desoldering the wave guide and attaching long wires does not seem to be a very good idea to me. I suppose you could mount the main unit behind the grill, and then just remote the rear sensors (in the third brake light housing) and use their remote display for the controls.
I wonder if Valentine has considered doing this.

Default Some thoughts

I sem to remember somewhere that the sensors have to be protected from outside elements; if not, they quickly deteriorated. Also, by "protected", I believe this means basically hermetically sealed. Somewhat hard to do on a consumer-type device.

Default Sealing should be a none issue - pre-made plastic boxes and epoxy should do the trick...
