Default read that

i read the beans out of that article, and others. i have a chilton book, read all that too. I'm working in my driveway with a little rug and my grandpa's old tool box. i got the cv boot part from partsgeek, but then i needed to buy a $40 sears allen wrench set to get the axle lug off.

so far: pulled the wheel, detatched the upper control arms and popped out the axle. the cv joint was wedged in between the shock and the steering knuckle -not workable there. had to put everything back together. will try again with the steering wheel turned, hopefully the cv joint can pop out on the back side of the knuckle so i can work with it. i got pics in my album of all my repairs.

Yep, turn the steering, you'll see which way gives the necessary room. Pull the CV joint free of the hub, then put the axle bolt back in, and tighten until the joint releases from the axle shaft.

the end of the axle shaft is not clearing the steering knuckle; even with the wheel turned. i can't get the cv joint out, and don't any have working clearance to knock it off.

Say atlasrising, I had a look on youtube to see what was there that may help you. I found a series of clips that may be useful, but gee the guy kinda gets to you after a while. When one clip finishes another will start. You kinda get spoon fed.

Sorry if it is not what you need. Just write it off as another failed attempt by me then.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcbeW...02B0C3BB829CCF

As you may know already, just click on the heading and you will be brought to youtube so you can choose from the series this guy made.

BTW, I found it by searching on youtube with "Audi b5 cv joint" in case the above doesn't work out for you.

Again, good luck!

Well then I'd next disconnect the tie-rod end. It won't change alignment if you just remove the joint's tapered post from the suspension casting.

I am in a similar situation. My front, passenger side outer CV has a small hole which I noticed when replacing the steering rack last week. Since I don't have gear pullers and the hose-clamp crimping tools which the article suggests, the cost of the tools plus the CV boot kit equals the price of a Refurbished Axle at NAPA auto. So I just wanted some advice about whether I should get a replacement axle from NAPA or try to replace the CV boot? I read the article in the link below and it seems the same amount of work is involved in changing the CV boot or replacing the axle plus I have the tools to replace the axle. However, I don't have the money to order a $200.00 axle from Raxle's which the author of the article suggested. The Axle at NAPA is $75.00 if I give them my old one. What are your thoughts?

Not the same work because of the disassembly/cleaning/reassembly of the joint makes the boot-kit job longer. An upside to buying a rebuilt drive shaft is that both joint ends are rebuilt, plus they say that ***** or rollers are new. The $75 NAPA rebuild should be OK.

On the other hand, if the joint is in decent shape, the boot kit at about $15 saves you $60. Crimping the steel bands can be improvised so you get the pinching action without special pliers. A tip I've read: If you change boots on both outer front joints, swap the left and right joints when reinstalling on the axles. This will make the ***** drive on the unworn side of the grooves (which normally are used in reverse), extending life of the joints.
