Default Self Leveling lights...

How obvious is the self leveling feature on 01 A4s? Do our lights adjust themselves when we come near another car? I notice on my friends bimmer that when we pull up to a car at the stop light you can tell that the cut off on his lights are getting lower and lower. I also notice on 03 A4s that they move up and down a lot when you first start the car. TIA

Default they adjust based on your car's level

if you are going uphill, they aim down some, do avoid going into the rear window of the car in front of you

it's attached to the suspension. So it adjusts itself based on that.

Would lowering your car affect this a lot?? Bascally when I first start my car I see it only move a little. Like up and down a 1/2 in.

I thought they where attached to a gyro-box - they are on the TT, located under rear seat

Default if his cut-off is getting lower and lower as you get closer to a car, that means

that his headlights are aimed above horizontal (i.e. mis-aimed). the cutoff should be a couple of inches below horizontal from the bulb/projector at a distance of 25 feet.

if he's aimed above horizontal he'll be blinding oncoming traffic as well as probably hitting the rearviews of cars he's coming up on.

Default all the leveling is based on the original aim done when the car is suposed to be level.

if you lowered your front and rear the same amount, the aim should theoretically be OK.

since most a4/s4 seem to have a higher front height than rear, when folks go to an equal height front/rear or a slight nose-down rake, the aim gets too low and needs to be redone upwards.

Default also, keep in mind that when you see it move 1/2 inch that's on a surface pretty close to you.

extend that 1/2 inch difference out 30 feet or more and it's much greater.

on my garage wall, the "step" in the beam pattern is only about 1 inch high, but it "grows" to several feet high when shining down the road.

Default I thought I read somewhere that your can have your ECU

adjusted to compensate for ride hide. some A6 owner had it done at the dealership when he had his car lowered.

Default you can also manually adjust the point that is "LEVEL" so that it returns to that point

so if you lower, and adjust the lights up slightly, they would return to that slightly higher position. but remember that while they are the correct height at this distance, someone far away will be blinded
