no, they attach on with 3 torx screws at the bottom of the ****. Pretty easy install. One recommendation, cut an inch off the top of your shift piping. It will lower the center of gravity and shorten your throw. I did this with my UUC as well. I got a shift **** from DTM AutoHaus that has a lighted shift pattern and an Audi Sport logo.
Looks like the original **** except for the lighting and the logo.
Comes with a new leather boot.
I also have a 97 2.8
I wired mine into the cig. lighter light.<p>12 has been enough for me.
