slow engine response

I recently purchased an 1997 A4 1.8T w/auto. I've been getting a hesitation from the engine. When I start up in the morning everything seems to be fine but when I get going and hit the gas pedal, I seem to be getting a delayed response from the engine. The car doesn't seem to want to move at all until a couple of seconds later. I've called Audi and I told them that my 99 Protege LX also with a 1.8litre engine has an acceleration rate faster than the A4. Can anyone help!

as small as the KO3 can be, there is still a little bit of lag.

any additional hesitation/studdering could be from your BPV.

otherwise try the usual remedies:

fuel injector cleaners
higher octane fuel
turn off AC. =)

your 99 protege weighs several hundred pounds less than your A4...until the turbo can spool up......

it's just a highly underpowered 1.8L engine. These symtoms don't pop up in the manual transmission cars.

Well, I don't have this problem with my '01 1.8TQSTip...

Underpowered? Maybe a little bit if you want to race, but for normal driving, NO! Turbo lag? Yes, maybe... But it's not like "the car doesn't want to move at all"! And BTW you still get the turbo lag with a manual tranny...

There maybe a problem with his car...

I've tried turning off the AC and I do get a better response from the engine but it still doesn't beat the Protege form 0-60mph. If this is normal then I'm really disappointed by the 1.8 engine.

I called the dealer and I was told that this should not happen and that possible problems may be:

1.Turbo lag
2. Dirty fuel injectors (I've been using high octane eversince I got the car and I'm assuming the previous owner did as well. In any case, I've purchased Valvoline fuel injector cleaner)
3. Bad plugs. (I replaced the plugs this morning..still no go)

I've made an appointment at the dealer and I'm going to let the dealership handle it.
