Starter Replacement
I have a 98 A4 1.8T non-quattro. The other night after work I could not get it to start. I was able to pop start the car and found out that my starter is all f**ked. Last night I attempted to replace it but ended up running into some problems, mainly that I wasnt able to get the starter out after it was unbolted. My repair guide says to remove the starter heat shield and also the a/c compressor. We were unable to get the belt that runs to the compressor loosened, and had no idea how to get the heat shield off. If anyone could give me some information on how to do this, as detailed as possible, I would be very appreciative. Im not too skillful with working on cars but I dont have the money to bring it into the shop again. Thankyou.

Starter heat shield is held on via a hose clamp. Feel around the main body of the starter and you will feel it. Un screw the clamp and the shield will come off. A/C compressor is held on with four bolts. Remove bolts and you can jimmy the compressor enough to take it down. NOTE: have a block of wood or hanger to hold it up so as not to pop the hoses.
Starter is a PITA, but has to be done.
