Starter - single click

I finally got in the new starter. When I go to start all I get is a single click - sounds like the solenoid is engaging. I checked the connection and they seem solid and seated well. I checked the battery voltage and even tried to jump with a known good battery. Any ideas?

I would slow charge the battery or replace it with a new one. I would still say your...

battery is dead.

is it a new starter or a reman? advice inside

thats an important tidbit cuz i cant tell you how many reman starters and alternators ive put in that were no good right outa the box.

2nd. did you make sure all the connections to the starter were put back in the right locations?

3rd i dont believe the a4 uses any type of shim so i guess thats out but if you try to rock the car a bit in gear before starting to get the flywheel to move might be worth a shot.the flywheel might be in just the right spot to block the drive gear. but that just shows that the solenoid isnt strong enough to move the flywheel the 1/8th of an inch to get the gear to engage so u'd need another starter anyway.

make sure the battery is 100% charged. good battery voltage should be 12.5 to 12.65 volts at rest(aka dont put a voltmeter on it right after you were charging it cuz they'll hold a surface charge around 13.5v for about 20 min)

what was the battery voltage ?

when i replaced my starter i had to go get my battery charged since i also did a bunch of other stuff and it was undone for ohh 2 weeks or so.. but it was under warranty and a quick charge and i was on my way

Check - on Bat to - on starter and your looking for voltage it should be close to 0

Also do that for both + sides if there is voltage that means your losing somewhere and need wire repaired. Also check for voltage directly on the starter. If the starter doesnt have battery voltage it wont work.

Thanks for the reply and things to try:

The starter is used.... but was tested. I did check here on the site to make sure I hooked it up right: two large connectors to the large post.... single red to the post farthest from the block.

I tried another battery from one of my other cars that starts just fine and made sure it was topped off.

Just tried the rocking trick in gear to move the flywheel - still the same single click. I had my gal try to start while I listened and the single click is very strong so it sounds like the solenoid is engaging, just not turning the starter.
