starting difficulty
I have a 98 1.8q manual, sport package with 48,000 miles. The engine is difficult to start when cold. The dealer said there is nothing wrong with it. My mechanic friend says that also, and suggests that I press the accelerator halfway down when starting up. This maneuver doesn't entirely solve the problem, and I have to crank for 4 to 5 seconds before the thing starts up. It then runs fine. When friends are with me they "get nervous" that we wont start up. Any ideas on what to do. BTW this was not a problem last winter, and it is annoying me enough to think about trading the car in.

There is a starting problem with late model Audi's but not this one. I've seen posts for cars that sat for a few weeks being hard to start which makes some sense. Every fuel injection car I've owned has started immediately w/o touching the gas pedal (even your op guide will tell you that). My VWs and the A4 seem to act the same they don't start as fast as my others but for some reason after about 5 revolutions (same every time) it starts, no excpetions, and I've been driving one of these for 5 yrs.
You have a problem. A couple of wild guesses: A leak in your fuel injection system somewhere. A problem with your fuel tank ventilation system. Weak fuel pump. Any of these can cause fuel to either not get to the cylinders quickly enough (for different reasons).
One thing you can try a couple of times. Loosen your gas cap when you park the car (if its going to sit for awhile). This will release any vacuum that builds up. If the car starts better the next time then you at least have something to tell the dealer. This most likely points to a ventilation or leak. LOL
