starting problems????

This weekend I tried to start my car and it wouldn't turn over. There was power and the volt meter was reading 12...but no turn over. A little cursing, holding the key in ignition position a little more cursing with some banging and the starter turned over, albeit with a nasty sound. It sounded like someone was still engaging the starter after the engine had already turned over. Since then I haven't had a problem starting it but I do notice that sound (quieter and shorter) especially after having the car parked for awhile. ALthough I would guess somethings up with the charge, the voltmeter has been fine. Any ideas?
Also...The car battery ran dead a few weeks back because some idiot (me) left a reading lamp on for 2 days. I got a "boost pack" jump from (which i thought was safe regulated voltage) and hadn't had any problems since. Could this be related?
I've also had all of the wiring in the engine bay redone because it was caught in the belts and fans b/c of a stupid bodyshop mistake...
I'm chipped...
are they going to give me crap about this when i take it in?

May be the temperature gauge

I had a very similar problem, although my check engine light kept intermittently coming on as well. Turns out the temperature gauge was wonky so the ignition process was not getting enough gas.

how much to fix it and could you do it yourself?

There's not much I can do myself :)

For me it was covered under warranty, so I don't know how much it would cost, but they did have to replace the temperature gauge, so there'd be parts if not labour in the charge.
