Default Tip is a compromise

An interesting one, but certainly not the same as a manual.

You need to think about how and where you drive. If you're in a crowded urban area and have the commute from hell, why subject yourself to a stick?

On the other hand, if your driving is light and breezy and/or sporty, stick is definitely the way to go. However, rent a stick and learn it real good before you subject yourself to your own Audi.

Also, I don't know that I'd recommend the 1.8 Tip. Autos suck power from the engine, so the engine needs it to give.

Default hm

If you can drive stick it is the way to go I think, unless you're one of those people who likes to drive and swerve while talking on the cell phone. That said, if you need an automatic, I'd go with the 2.8.

I think for 2002 audi is coming out with an improved (6 speed!) auto transmission that will be more efficient.

If you want to get the most from your A4 1.8T(or any performance vehicle) definitely manual is the way to go. There is much more immediate power and control available to you with a stick. Cornering, accelerating, & stopping all become an art. You may not appreciate a stick at first but when you learn it well it can make a car an amazing experience.

Stick in a 2.8 is pretty sweet. Good clutch feel. Fun fun fun!

Default From an automatic owner - GET A STICK!

I've regretted the automatic from the moment I drove it off the lot. But I've driven sticks all my life, and I miss the control that it gives you over the cars handling and performance. I thought I was at the point in my life where I was ready for an automatic, but I was wrong.

Perhaps some other cars with automatic aren't so bad, but this one is too quick to upshift and too slow to downshift. It will go into 5th gear at about 30 mph if you stop accelerating, but it has no torque at that low RPM. If you try to get around someone, you have to wait for what seems like an eternity for it to make two (very noticeable) downshifts. Same thing happens when trying to accelerate out of a corner.

If you can't test drive a stick, make sure you give the automatic a thorough test drive before you go that route. Tiptronic might be a reasonable compromise. I've never driven one though.

Default My situation - evaluations welcome

I live at school (umass) so a few times every 4 months i drive the 4 and a half hours home. long highway drives, when i am not traveling home , at homei drive on country style open light traffic roads, and at school the roads are even more beutiful but there are definately times when i will sit in traffic. I NEVER drive in the city.
I drove stick once and plan to again the only problem is that i cant find a stick to rent
the only way i can drive stick is to go "test drive" '97 VW for the afternoon. Works out better cause its free and i have no obligation to the vehicle at all. Anyway i do talk on my cell phone a lot but i have a hands free kit however someone told me if i often zone out while driving i wouldnt want a stick but maybe i wouldnt zone out if i had a stick.<p>peace,
Lou

I only had a week's worth of practice on stick before I got my '01 A4 1.8TQMS, and I've had a blast with it. I can't believe that I used to drive any other way!

If you have one arm, one leg or just don't care about having full control, get an automatic.
